I’m a Digital Content Specialist, ready to help your brand find its voice and tell its story.

About Me

I’m a digital content creator with a broad-ranging background built over 20+ years in the web industry. Clients including Samsung, Walmart, BetterMed, Smurfit Westrock, Johnson & Johnson, and Dominion Energy have contracted me to help build out their brand voice through digital communications including social media, web site content, blog posts, targeted emails, newsletters, regular columns, and more.

I got my start in web development in the heady web 1.0 era at Richmond’s Martin Agency and moved into digital program management before launching my freelance writing career in the mid-2000s. This varied background gives me an uncommon understanding of the technical and production requirements of digital work while creating targeted and nuanced copy.

I’m a graduate of James Madison University with a degree in English, and – always a fan of the unexpected – I also hold a degree in Pâtisserie from Capsicum Culinary School in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Work

Smurfit Westrock

Paper and packaging / Agency: OTH Strategies
This corporate giant with-a-heart remains one of my most endearing clients, for whom I primarily create social media. Writing about paper and packaging could get tedious, but their profound commitment to sustainability, diversity and inclusion, employee empowerment, and scientific innovation keeps an otherwise vanilla (manila?) topic fresh and exciting.

Johnson & Johnson

Health and pharma / Agency: OTH Strategies
You know them as the makers of Tylenol, Band-Aids, and their ubiquitous Johnson’s Baby line, but Johnson & Johnson are also passionate advocates for mental health. I contribute articles to their quarterly Mental Health Network newsletter, an internal resource promoting discussion of mental health issues and insight into enterprise MH initiatives.

Dominion Energy

Energy company / Agencies: Mobelux, WayPath
The client so nice, I’ve worked with them thrice! Thanks to the tangled web that is the Richmond advertising community, I’ve done three distinct large-scale projects for Dominion Energy over the course of three years for two different agencies — everything from copy for their corporate site, to launching their smart-home product suite, to content-templating a CMS.

Belgard

Hardscape products / Agency: Release the Hounds
This national commercial and residential hardscape manufacturer knows that content is king, and they’ve built out a web site with a deep and ever-growing offering of articles, blog posts, inspiration, and how-to’s. I contribute 2-3 pieces per month for Belgard and parent company APG Oldcastle on outdoor living topics like edible gardens, curb appeal, and pool design.

BetterMed

Urgent care centers / Agency: Release the Hounds
BetterMed operates a dozen urgent care centers across Virginia and North Carolina, and they also publish an insightful blog empowering people to manage their own health and wellness. I contribute monthly posts on topics ranging from burn care and first aid, to nutrition and lifestyle tips, to of-the-moment issues like vaccines and video conference fatigue.

Samsung

Consumer electronics / Agencies: Barbarian Group, Cheil
I spent years churning out hundreds of short-form articles for Samsung. Each 800ish word piece (with accompanying social media promos) featured a Samsung product, neatly wrapped in a lifestyle article about entertaining, or multitasking, or printer crafts, or travel photography, or kitchen odors, or, or, or…

Older Work

AOL.com

Digital media company
I contributed 3x-weekly lifestyle articles to AOL’s Real Estate channel, for their “Rented Spaces” column. Over the span of four years, I tackled everything from brunch menus to mortgage tips – and oddly enough (also a sign of AOL’s failure to progress into the modern web era) a few dozen articles are still live, 15+ years on.

SeriousEats.com

Culinary web site
I contributed a series of articles to food site SeriousEats under their Culinary Ambassador column. On the Venn diagram of my life, this is where Digital, Writing, and Food (did I mention I’m also a trained pastry chef?) intersected.

Walmart

Retailer / Agency: The Martin Agency
After two tours as a Martin Agency employee (sandwiched around 5 years at my own successful digital startup), I signed on with them as a freelance writer. My first project found me churning out over 300 pieces of individual creative in just under 2 weeks, in the run-up to Walmart’s busy holiday season.

Tylenol

Consumer health / Agency: The Martin Agency
I worked with the Tylenol team to produce a variety of media for the brand, including content for partnerships such as with WebMD, branded mini-sites, and online product tools.

Work Magazine

Periodical
Despite its eye-stabbing graphic design and now hysterically dated content, the “Web Chatter” column that I co-wrote for three years for Richmond-based Work magazine now serves as a sort of time capsule for the waning moments of the Web 1.0 heyday.

Richmond Magazine

Periodical
My second foray into print media, I contributed a few articles to Richmond Magazine’s lifestyle offshoots, RHome and Richmond Bride. I think it was my interview with the eccentric J. Frank, personal chef to Richmond art maven Frances Lewis, that kicked off my passion for food: I started culinary school a year after the article published.

Friends & Fam

On Point Outfitters

Online Retailer
I worked with this startup lifestyle company (whose founders also happen to be my nephews) to help establish their brand voice, which turned out to be a strong but sentimental spin on traditional Southern values. The line “Drawn to the land, bound by the hunt, guided by tradition” resonated so strongly with them that it now features prominently on the merchandise.

Dr. Broth

Food Retailer
I helped these restaurant owners / friends establish a new brand for their small-batch bone broth startup: consulting on the package and web design, writing the web copy, and setting social media guidelines. Bonus, I got a weekly delivery of delicious, gourmet meat nectar.

Client Hype

I’ve worked with Lizzy for 2+ years on a range of writing projects, and I always trust her to distill the most complex topics into beautiful words that are as clear as they are compelling. No matter the topic, she can find the joy and fun, and she is just lovely to work with—gracious, organized, thoughtful and reliable. I would strongly recommend her if I didn’t want to keep all her time to myself!
